Twelve Tips for Inclusive Practice in Healthcare Settings – Lessons from the Public Health Association of Australia

Author: Dr Allison Salmon, Director, The Centre for Impact & Change

Led by Dr Brahm Marjadi, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Special Interest Group of the Public Health Association of Australia has recently provided an excellent set of practical tips for inclusive healthcare practice and service delivery, covering diversity aspects and intersectionality.

Our Centre values prioritise putting people at the centre – which means we prioritise inclusivity, diversity, and equitable participation, ensuring that our work reflects and respects the needs and voices of all stakeholders

We see the value of the twelve tips outlined in the paper by Marjadi and their co-authors as they are both practical and broadly applicable:

  1. beware of assumptions and stereotypes

  2. replace labels with appropriate terminology

  3. use inclusive language

  4. ensure inclusivity in the physical space

  5. use inclusive signage

  6. ensure appropriate communication methods

  7. adopt a strength-based approach

  8. ensure inclusivity in research

  9. expand the scope of inclusive healthcare delivery

  10. advocate for inclusivity

  11. self-educate on diversity in all its forms

  12. build individual and institutional commitments.

“As evidence for the importance of inclusive healthcare practices and research continues to grow, a broader view needs to be embraced beyond day-to-day service delivery. Education in diversity and inclusion for all health professions, both in basic training and continuing professional education, is paramount. At the national level, advocacy is needed to enshrine inclusive practices in health service accreditation schemes, as well as in national guidelines for health research.” Dr Marjadi et al., 2023
